Great presentation.
Having just left Marlborough, actually Ogbourne Maizey, last Sepember and having just been informed by another ex-Marlbourian (?) in France (!) of this site my first visit. I'll be Back!! Keep up the good work.
My husbands father was born and raised in Marlborough. He moved to Canada when he was 18 years of age. The rest of his family remained in England. His name was Raymond Chessall. His father's name was Albert and his mother's maiden name was Stevens. I am in the process of compiling a family tree, I would be interested in hearing from persons who know of or have heard of Chessalls'or Stevens. Other than Raymond's siblings, we do not know if he had any aunts or uncles as he never spoke of them.
I attended MGS from 1964 to 1968. One of the best memories was the school trip to Bergerac with Linda Beal supposedly to learn the language (HAW HAW). My name then was Caroline Williams I also remember Janet Grover/Louth, the mop Fair and my dads cricket club in Savernake Forest. I used to make the teas in a dilapidated thatched club house. feel free to email if you knew me.
I`ve just started using internet and one of the first sites I looked for were any on Marlborough. I was born there in 1968 and lived there until moving to nearby Burbage in 1982. I`ve been living in France now for nearly thirteen years and now that I can connect up to your wonderful website, I feel alot more closer to home.
Browsing through to see if I could see any old school friends' names. I went to the Grammar School in 1974, which became St.John's Comprehensive and left in 1979. My brother, Martin was two year's younger and also attended St.John's. I particularly remember Sarah Pennells, Rosemary Ogilvie, Louise Morefield and Catherine Jennings.
Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me - my name then was Susan Penny.
Please could someone help me?? My family the Cummins came from Buttermere Wiltshire. My Grandmother use to talk to them on the phone before she passed away in 1979. I know there are still some there. I would very much like to get in touch with them and learn about the family and themselves. I have no way to go there myself. My Grandmother said her name was Josephine, but we found out it was really Florence, daughter of Jonas Cummins and Caroline Jordan. I would really love any help you can give me. Cathy
A great site, lots of memories.I lived in Manton until 1945.Love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
OUR FAMILY VISITED YOR BEAUTIFUL TOWN ON SUMMER -98. SO I FIND THESE SITES VERY INTERESTING. OLD PHOTOS, HISTORY ETC.
GREETINGS TO TIINA KORHONEN AND STEVE CRIPPS AT HIGH STREET 1.
Wonderful images of Marlborough! We'll have to see them in person soon, perhaps in September.
It would be nice if the sites linked to your home site would enable the "back" button so that I didn't have to restart every other page (eg Jazz Festival).
Hi - found this site very interesting! My family moved to Mildenhall from Dorset when I was 6 months old. We left in May 1968, shortly after my ninth birthday, to move to the Isle of Wight (where I have lived ever since!). My maiden name was Standfield, and I attended a little Church of England junior school in Mildenhall. Only 30 kids at most! The headmistress's name was Ivy Price, who I believe died many years ago; she was a very sweet person. Hoping to visit Marlborough later this year for a Nostalgia Break!!
I lived at Clench Common and we had a store; attended Marlborough Grammar School in the early 1930's and have returned to visit my brothers and sisters periodically through the years. I have many wonderful memories of Marlborough and would enjoy hearing from any friends who are still living!
I left MGS in 1939 w/OSC in time for outbreak of WWII. My siblings Buster (Bill), Eric, Bob, Janice, Mike all live in Marlborough still. Janice, Mike, and youngest, Hazel who died in Jan. '53, followed me to MGS. We have three children and two grandchildren. We plan on attending re-union in September. I have very happy memories of MGS. Saw Mr. Stevens (Maths)in Sept. of '97. I'll be glad to receive e-mails. Your website is fantastic. Regards to all, Doris Cox Rishell

This is a really good website we were doing an ict lesson when we had to find where we lived and to my surprise there is a whole website. My school is based in Marlborough and is called St.johns
Didn't expect to find such a good site about Marlborough! I went to M.G.S. (and stayed at Wye House) from 1967 to 1974, does anyone else remember the Homemade sweet shop in Barn Street? Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
What an enchanting place! You are very lucky to live in such beauty.
I am liking your kind Marlborough very much! It is having the horses for to race fast on green green grass. I coming now to be seeing what is going on in the Lamb in and to score. Thanking you Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Just checking up on the green green grass !!!
I have some queries. Two elderly ladies are thinking of spending a week in Marlborough in June, but using only public transport. Are there buses to anywhere ? Are there organised coach trips from the town to other places nearby ? How can they reach Marlborough - one from Bristol, the other from London ?

It's wonderful to see 'my' flat on the top floor at 3 High Street - both as it is now, rebuilt, and as it was during the fire. Malcolm Ward has made a fantastic job of the rebuild, though sadly I will have to sell it now as I am working in Canterbury - but I will be back in Marlborough to stay for good in 2 or 3 years' time at the latest and will visit frequently meantime. The Web site is great - keep up the good work. Julia
My family and I lived in Marlborough in 1980/81. What a wonderful town! We would like to go back there often! And what a wonderful site! Thanks!
Will make it to the MGS reunion later this year. In the meantime any old friends from MGS 1968 to 1972 who remember me can email me. I would love to hear from anyone I was at school with.
I VISTED FAMILY WHO ARE THE MANAGERS OF THE ROEBUCK INN ON LONDON ROAD. I THOUGHT THAT THE TOWN WAS LOVERLY AND IT WILL NOT BE LONG UNTILLI AM BACK THERE.
Wonderful site. I was brought up and married in Wootton River. I was so please to find this sight. Looking at local pictures reminded me of home. Thank you for such a great site
My wife and I will be visiting Great Britain sometime next year, and were planning on coming through Marlborough, home to one of my ancestors. After having seen this site, I've had a change of plans-- we won't just pass through, but stop and visit for a few days. Thank you! By the way-- any Hiscockes, Hitchcocks, or Franklins out there? Don Place
Enjoyed my trip down memory lane.
Hello Wiltshire! I love looking at the places where my ancestors come from. I am related to the Cummins in Buttermere. If you know any of them, Please contact me. I would like to get in touch with them. My Grandmother was Florence Mary, her father was Jonas Cummins, her mother was Caroline Jordan. Cheers to all and hope to visit here someday! Cathy
Attended MGS from 1970 to 1977 and would love to organize a reunion with everyone in "our year". Have found a few, there are still a lot of people out there. Hoping May 2002 will be the time, not sure of the place yet. Somewhere in Marlborough, obviously. Have to say it's wonderful to look up old names and places with such ease from so far away. Keep up the good work and encourage all you old students to register.
Hello everyone and anyone who knows or indeed remembers me. Please feel free to Email me
Best wishes from Peter Fleet
All Marlborough Grammar School Students who started attending between the years 1960 to 1980 (Yes St John's from 76 onwards) please note I am compiling a database of e-mail addresses, or contact addresses to enable reunions/contacts to be made. This is a completely free service!!! Please send your details to me, and I will register you on the database. If you need to search for anyone, please ask and I will check the files. I am doing this in my own time so dont expect an immediate repsonse!!
Thanks to all who have participated so far - keep the details coming! Please also register any change of address or details as well to the same e-mail address.

I have spent lots of nostalgic hours going thru everything on your Marlborough website. Grew up between Bedwyn and Burbage. Attended St. Katharines Junior School. Attended MSM from 1955-58. Left the area to join the army in 1960. Aiming to attend the schools reunion on 30 Sept 2000. Anyone I knew / knew me, please contact by e-mail. Website - Superb. Thank you.

Good website and good pictures. Anybody remember me or my family......

MYSELF AND 27 USA GIRL SCOUTS JUST RETURNED FROM A VISIT TO MARLBOROUGH ,ENGLAND IN FEBRUARY. WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME VISITING WITH THE MAYOR , GIRL GUIDES AND BOY SCOUTS. THERE WERE MANY PICTURES TAKEN, BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN THEM ON YOUR WEB PAGE AS OF YET. WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM. GINNY O'NEILL-GIRL SCOUT LEADER,MARLBOROUGH, MA.USA
The unusual combination of Marlborough and Wooton Rivers makes me wonder if you are from the latter. If so and you are related to Denis Dickens please pass on my best wishes. Back in the early sixties I was his co- pilot in a Stevens milk van.
I use to live in beautifull Marlborough, anybody that remembers me, let me know if you are still around!
I enjoyed looking at pictures of our 'sister' city across the Atlantic. Marlborough, Massachusetts is approximately 25 miles (1/2 hour) west of Boston and was established as a town in 1660 and became a city in 1890, so it is fairly old (in United States terms that is...)
Can anyone tell me how I can order a sweatshirt or shirt that has the Marlborough logo on it? Fortunately, I have a letter that I found from 1989 (yes, 11 years old!) from Crosby & Lawrence, it is is still listed on your business directory on 67 High Street. I tried to get a sweatshirt with "Marlborough College" on it, but unfortunately, according to Mrs P. Thompson, they were unable to accomodate my request at that time due to the summer school being closed. I was just curious to see if I could still order this. Thank you, Albert Cavallo
Can anyone help me?
I am trying to help my sister Hazel Sherwood, locate any of her old school friends. We used to live at Forest Hill Farm overlooking the downs, we left Marlborough in 1968 (when I was 4!) my sister went to Chopping Knife Lane school and left in 1967(?)my brother Bryan was also at the same school. My sister remembers: Linda Roberts, Belinda Samuels, Cherry Evans (who later married a Marine and became Cherry Hughes), Judith Rossitor, Jennifer Spackman, Pip Palmer (who was a great friend of Byran and used to build fertilizer bombs in our barn), Kevin O'Keefe,Stephen Brown, Janet Brown, Robert Cady, Andrew Cady, Hilary Tomllin, Steven Besant, and a number of people called Munday (Nicholas, Noel, Richard, Julia, Raymond)who may/may not have been one large family.
If anyone remembers Hazel or Bryan, knows what happened to the people listed please let me know. Thanks Russ
Hi great site it`s nice to see messages from my family on here (elsie , chris & tim ) . i still visit the place often so don`t miss it as much as i should but living by the sea is great and a far cry from witshire. if anyone reading this remembers me or went to school with me please message me as i have lost contact with nearly all the people from school (if it helps i left school in 1985).
look forward to hearing from anyone and good luck for your future justin
I love the Marlborough wallpaper - now every time I switch on the computer at home or work, I am reminded of home! Great website!
I'm hoping to visit your fair city this fall for Sassoon Day. Is there anyplace in particular I should see?
My friend, Howard Robinson of Newton Toney, visited Marlborough on 04 March 2000 and sent me an e-mail message about this visit. His description of this town was so interesting that immediately made me visit your website. I can honestly say that I'm fascinated by the beautiful pictures accompanied with lovely music and interesting stories. Whoever prepared this site is obviously a great admirer of the town and its history and this can be felt from every comment.
I truly spent most relaxing time with you and can't wait to visit Marlborough first time I come to UK.
Thank you for the good work.
Nada
What a great page.It certainly brought back memories for me.I attended the Marlborough Grammar school between 1962 and 1968 with other mates such as Jane Lansley, Jeremy Witts,Granville Hodge etc.Married ,had four children and emigrated to Australia 16 years ago.Although I am now a 'dinkum ozzi' the views and letters about Marlborough certainly took me back.I well remember the booze ups at the Sun Inn.Would love to hear from any ols schoolmates.I lived in Pewsey and travelled to school by bus.Hope someone out there remembers those times!
Thank you for the warm and wonderful visit to Marlborough, England on February 23rd. It was so great to meet with all the girl guides, boy scouts, leaders, the Mayor, Mace bearers ,and town crier. My girl and boy scouts had a fantastic time. We are looking forward to spending the whole day with you next February 2001.

Greetings to the residents of Marlborough. I grew up in Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA, and wish to pay my compliments to your fine city.
i think the website is excellent and a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
this is a great website and is amazing seeing all the old pics!
This sight is absolutely amazing; it provides an excellent insight into the history of Marlborough!
WOW!!....I didn't think there would be a web site for old Marlborough. I left about 10 years ago just before starting St. Johns highschool and the place looks just as it was when I left. If anyone that I went to school with recognises my name please drop me a line at the email above.
Cheers for the trip down memory lane!!:) Mike
A great website that brings back a lot of childhood memories.
I would be interested to know if anyone remembers my parents Phil and Jean Sewell,(sadly both now deceased) who ran The Crown in the late 60's early 70's or any of my 6 bothers and sisters, Phillippa, Laura, Melita, Kim, Karen or Robin.
I left Marlborough when I was 3 to live near Upavon for 8 years and haven't ever been back since I was 11....and this site certainly has given me the inspiration to come visiting! Thank you
Hope to visit again soon.
Since putting my entry in the guest book 25th oct 1999 I have heard from some school friends, an ex bosses daughter, and a second cousin in Vancouver B.C. that I did not know I had. Also from a young women in California who like me is feeling home sick.
Come on there is a lot more of my friends out there.
I am coming home to visit later this year.
Cheers.
I was very bored, thought i'd sack the work off, and surf the web instead....my not so distant memories reminded me of the amazing and enchanting place where I once went to school!(Marlborough College) God I'd forgotten about how great the little place really is, did'nt expect to find a site on Marlborough. I'm glad I sacked the work off! Great site which has brought back a lot of amazing memories of times i'd forgotten about. anyone who went to the college will agree its an amazing place to go to school, only trouble is, you hate it when your there, but long for it when you leave! Gonna have to go back for prize day one of these days! If any old mates want to get in touch, do drop us a line.(At the college from 1994-96-Summerfield).
I have been to Marlborough in 1996. Marlborough is a very nice town with a beauty full city. When i will have finished my study i will come back to Marlborough for a holiday
A brilliant site !
My grandparents the Cartwrights used to live in Marlborough on George Lane. My grandfather Reginald Cartwright was a policeman in Marlborough. My mother (Patricia Cartwright) married an American (Gary Fitzwater) soldier and moved to the states. We used to visit almost every summer and stay with them. I made my firt communion in Marlborough at the church on George Lane and I have countless memmories of staying with them. I now work as a gardener at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Your web site is really wonderful and has brought back a lot of memmories. The town seems as lovely as I remember and I hope to some day get back to see it.
I was trying to find any mention of The Marlborough Natural Health Centre, including the photo's sent - How do I do this??
Justina
Hi Rob
Much as I appreciate the site can't you get rid of that gross pseudo music? It interferes with my radio listening and sounds like an outdated synthesiser of early poor quality. Why not create your own net radio?
What a great site. I shall be back again to see what's new? Perhaps even visit "live" in the future.
I was born and raised in marlborough as one of the "Dobie's". This web page comes at a great time as I am feeling very homesick!
Help, please, I will be in Marlborough October 19th through the 23rd for Siegfried Sassoon Day at Marlborough College. Arriving at Heathrow Airport. Besides driving, how do I get to Marlborough?
I have enjoyed your site. Margo
Does anybody remember this name? well i don't have an e-mail address yet but being a reformed marlbriarian i will be keeping in touch.
I think your w.s is pretty cool bye...............
Looks a wonderful place with plenty of history. i believe there is a pub there called the Sun Inn. Can anybody give me some information about it?
trying to find our info of long ago, late 1700's for Lilliput Lane cottage collection stories. Any one want to contact me, please do so. Love pen pals from all areas! So glad to have found this site, tho not as 'old" as I need it was interesting; especially the 'stories' part.
Good reading the Marlborough Site. Have been trying to contact Nigel Kerton but our server is not connecting the published E Mail address. Nigel - please advise
Thanks Stuart
Good to read the Marlborough Site. Have been trying to contact Nigel Kerton. Our server is not recognising your E Mail address. Please contact us.
A great web site. I love the old photographs. I have a long family history in Marlborough and would be very interested to hear from anyone researching the DUNFORD family (boot & shoemakers at 113 High Street) or the WHITE family of Marlborough and Preshute.
you need to change the music it is so dull and brighten up you page with a cheerful background
seen the pictures of james thanks
I was wondering whether the Marlborough Jazz Festival is still being held? Colin
Nice web site - loved the old pictures - Recent info, we now have an approved path across Stonebridge Meadows from the Lane, towards the football club and then diagonally across that part of the Meadow towards Tinpits where it adjoins the other path. This was despite some real "problems" with the local tenant. I was the local Police Sergeant from 74 to 80 - Now retired (Thank God) I may ??? be remembered by some of you
I've spent a pleasant afternoon learning more about a city I've only heard of from my relatives. You have a wonderful site, I am sure I will visit often.
Many years have past since I was in marlborough, the time i spent there was outstanding, I was part of a television crew, and the memories of the town,The Pubs , the "Bear" "the Lamb" and the Merlin" and that special "friend" I made there will be with me until I visit again.
I have visited Marlborough on several occassions, holidaying at the Saverake Camp site and have always enjoyed the times I have spent there. I would just like to extend my thanks to the people of Marlborough for the kindness they have shown me. A truly beautiful little town!.
Still looking to reunite with people who remember me or my parents. I have copied across my original message from the 1999 Guest Book:-
----------------------------------------------------------- I can't tell you how amazed I was to find a website on Marlborough. Truly excellent effort which leaves you begging for more.
My parents, Edna and John Pearce used to run The Green Dragon pub in The High Street in the early seventies before taking over The White Hart in Oare. They are now both retired and living in Swindon, and I know they still see some of their old customers who they fondly think of as friends.
I attended Marlborough Grammar School and went through the changes when it became St John's Comprehensive.
If anyone remembers my parents or me (the little fat boy!)I would love to hear from you.
I am a descendant of william and mary elizabeth collins of marlborough england who came to australia 1850s my wife and i visited your beautful town march 1999 will answer any desendands of collins or quelch
Very Good. Can you push out the geographical limits to include places such as Ramsbury, Aldbourne and the Va\le of Pewsey where my wife, who was born at Ramsbury, has many connections by ancestry.
