Marlborough College was established in 1843 . The site the College stands on was formerly occupied by a Castle, built by Roger, Bishop of Salisbury in the reign of Henry I, The clump of trees you can see in the middle of of the upper picture is the mound on which the castle was built, part of the moat can be seen ( lower right ) as the college swimming pool.

The arch over the main road to Bristol still survives today.
