FIRE !  

The fire started in the top right hand room at about 17.20 on Monday 8th June 1998. The Fire Brigade arrived within minutes ( the Fire Station is 100 metres away ) and quickly called for help, in the end there were over 110 Fire-fighters at the incident, 3 crews stood watch over-night to damp down any hotspots. 
8 July:
The road in front of the shops has been reopened but will be subject to temporary closures over the next 18 Months
6 November:
nothing seems to be happening at the moment the whole building is covered with scaffolding including a roof to keep some of the rain out.

  April 1999:
Planning permission sought to restore the building.
September 1999:
Work started on the restoration of the building
  February 2000 The scaffolding is coming down!!  the building certainly looks a lot better than it did back in June 1998 although it's odd to see so many straight lines on what was a 300 year old part of the High Street, it's good to see it in one piece again
